Accessibility
We want anyone who wants to adopt, surrender, volunteer or donate to be able to use this site.
What we have done
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. That is a target we design and build toward, not a certification we have been audited against — so if something here does not work for you, we would genuinely like to know.
- Text and background colors are checked for contrast, and body text does not rely on color alone to carry meaning
- Every page can be navigated by keyboard, with a visible focus outline and a “skip to content” link at the top
- Images that carry information have text alternatives
- Text resizes without breaking the layout, and the site is built to work from a small phone up to a very large desktop display
- The spinning sunburst on our pages stops automatically if your device is set to reduce motion
- Headings are structured in order so screen readers can navigate the page
Where we know we fall short
Some documents on this site are PDFs that were produced years ago — the volunteer handbook, the covenant and release, the hurricane foster form. They may not read well in a screen reader. If you need the contents of any form or document in another format, call us and we will read it to you, post it to you, or fill it in with you over the phone.
Some pages link out to forms hosted in our shelter management software. We do not control the accessibility of those pages. If one of them gets in your way, contact us and a member of staff will complete it with you directly.
Tell us
If any part of this site is difficult to use, please tell us. We will help you get what you needed, and we will fix the page.
